Hi everyone,
I'm new to Memory Training and I have some questions about the Peg System…

I don't know why but some Peg numbers seem to be easier for me to remember than others.
Some numbers can easily stick to my brain without even one review.
Ex: As soon as I look at the number 11 and 94, the picture of the WORD "tot" and "bear" automatically flash in my eyes
22 and 33 give me the sound nun and mummy in my ear
20, 44 and 99 give me the picture of the object nose, a boat with oars and a pipe in my eyes
and non of them need any practice and I don't think I have any special memory about them that make me recall faster

Other numbers are much more harder to remember. I need to see the number, think about it's sound, find the word and convert it into picture
So I wonder what makes these numbers special and easy for me to remember and how I can do the same with other numbers

All you need to do is to practice it regularly. Give yourself one hour a day to go about 00-99 or 000-999 if that's the amount of peg numbers you utilize.

There is no easy way to go about this except to practice and review it.

That's all there is to it.

Ex. 00 – zazu :P Just practice when you see this number remember zazu from the lion king. Then imagine zazu – 00 automatically pops up. The 00- zazu again.

Yeah, I know…
I just want to know why these numbers are easier to remember than others even without practice

The reason behind that is because some numbers have difficult image counterparts. Some images are not familiar to you. This is only because you've yet to be exposed to a lot of different things. For example. Nose 20, is very familiar- it is something you see everyday. In contrast 00- seas or zazu is difficult due to the fact that you may not have encountered the movie the lion king. The word seas itself is somewhat questionable too. Therefore the more you are familiar with more words- that represent nouns, you will have it easier to create peg images.

37 – mk is not easy. My image here is maki (a character in a japanese animation). Just hang in there. :)

Since English is not my first language, most of the words above are not by all means familiar to me.
It's my first time learning the word "tot" but the picture of the writing word still sticks to my brain
Even in real life, I've never seen a real bear or rower b4 but compare to "lion" they are much more easier to remember

For some numbers, I see picture of the writing word, for others I see the real life picture or hear the sound of them in my head

I usually go from numbers to words. Even if the word is familiar to me, I don't know how can the number immediately connect to that word when others do not

Does anyone have the same experience (with different numbers of course) learning the peg system?

I suggest that you create your own images based on your own language equivalent.

Ex. 11 – tt – tito, tita, tata, toto, tuta – are image euivalents in my own native tongue. You don't have to translate it to english. I'm sure you're language will have a similar phonetic equivalent. Try it that way.

00- ss – susu – that's breast in my language. It's hell of a lot easier to remember in contrast to zazu or seas. :)

From your examples I suspect you use the Major System to encode the numbers to letters. Although this is a great system for beginners and pros it lacks good alternatives for some of the numbers between 00 and 99. Given your language (which is?) they may vary. Eventually you will end up with some difficult pegs.

In this case you should try to bend or even ignore the basic major code. You should rather search for natural associations. Maybe the number reminds you of a special event like a birthday or something in history. Come up with a representative image for this event and replace it with the previous peg. Another strategy is to associate something with the difficult one. For Example you have the word bill for the number 95. This might be difficult to visualise so you come up with a giant diamond which is the bill for.

In both cases you still end up with the problem to remember that you have made an exception with this number. Make a list with all these troublesome numbers and try to memorize them. If you have a dozen of them they should be easy to identify after a few trys. Then you can check your new list with peg words to remind you.

If you still have problems to come up with some pegs you could memorize them in order with the string method. Next time you can't remember a number, recheck your list and jump more or less directly to the position. If you need the number 82 for example, start at end of your story and go backwards.  That way you should quickly have access to the right image.
